EcoTurs Staff and Guides
EcoTurs is composed of a dedicated and experienced team, including international and national logistical support, reservations, and sales, as well as several birding and nature guides.
Angela Gomez - EcoTurs Managing Director. Angela is a professional environmental administrator with two years experience in the area of ecoturism and ecosystem conservation, particularly issues regarding sustainaibility for protected areas and logistics. She has been leading EcoTurs since 2008. Email: agomez @ ecoturs.org
Robert Giles - International coordinator. Robert has been visiting Colombia frequently since 1992, including a six-month sabbatical birding across Colombia in 1994. He is also a dedicated bird conservationist, being a member of the ProAves Board and has personally greatly supported the organisation in recent years. Robert is dedicated to assisting all international clients.
Trevor Ellery - Expert birding guide. Trevor has six years experience guiding in the Neotropics, first for Tropical Birding in Ecuador and since mid 2008 with EcoTurs in Colombia. Trevor is already one of Colombia's top bird guides and is presently living in the El Dorado Reserve, where he is constantly adding new species to the reserve list!
Juan Carlos Luna - Expert birding and nature guide. Juan Carlos has 14 years birding experience across Colombia and has participated in many ornithological and banding/ringing courses, including training in the UK. Juan Carlos has conducted many detailed bird studies at reserves since 1995, including at El Pangan, Cerulean Warbler, Pauxi pauxi and Orange-breasted Falcon reserves. Juan Carlos is also one of Colombia's most passionate conservationists.
Avery Bartels -"Avery has been birding hard in the American tropics for 4 years from Mexico to Ecuador. Colombia captured his heart in 2009 when he first visited the country. After a month exploring the Proaves reserves and seeing the myriad of endemics he was hooked! Since then he has volunteered with and conducted research for Proaves at Reinita Cielo Azul, Colibri del Sol and Las Tangaras reserves. Back home in Canada Avery is a Biologist where he has worked and volunteered across the country."
Ben Freeman - Expert birding guide. Benjamin is a US biologist and bird guide with experience in Ecuador, Brazil and Colombia for EcoTurs. Presently Ben spends his spare time studying and appreciating Colombia's magnificent avifauna. As a field ornithologist, Benjamin has studied the natural history and breeding biology of birds, and published articles in journals. Not available at present.
Alonso Quevedo - Photography and nature guide. Alonso is President of ProAves, and has personally been involved in many of the most important ornithological events, such as the rediscovery of Fuertes’s Parrot. He is an expert not just on birds but on amphibians and reptiles, and an accomplished photographer (most of the photos in this brochure are his).
Diana Balcázar - Expert Bogotá birding guide. Diana is a passionate birder and conservationist and the author of the book "Los pájaros de mi Ciudad" about the birds of her native Bogotá. She is the communications director of ProAves and was previously an environmental journalist.
Dr Frank Lambert - Birding and nature guide. Frank is an internationally renowned ornithologist with expensive knowledge of South American birds since 1991, when he first visited Colombia. In 2007, Frank spent three months in ProAves reserves locating key species. Frank has written more than fifty papers on birds and described three new species.
Claudia Díaz Remolina - Assistant Accountant. Claudia has been the accounting assistant since July 2008. She is a dynamic person with skills in the area of management, accounting and administration. She beleives in the importance of environmental stewardship as an expression of compassion towards creation.
Gloria Castillo - Ecovolunteers program Coordinator. Gloria is a professional in Ecology with two year experience on different environmental programs as a coordinator in Colombia and Canada. She is passionate and committed for conservation which is shown through her enthusiastic work in ProAves managing the Ecovolunteers program since 2008. Email: gcastillo@proaves.org
